May or may not be a Clean_DNS  problem but since the day of installing Clean_DNS the Windows\Start icon in bottom left of Win 10 screen is a mess, ie left clicking on it shows all options but lets you go/click no further on any of them. If I right click the Start icon though most of those options work, but Search won't work. Anyone any idea how to correct this scenario? Again, I say it may not be Clean_DNS causing this. Thanks anyone for any help.

Re: Start\Windows icon

Have you noticed anything else weird/out of the ordinary on your PC? Can you try booting into Windows "Safe mode with networking" and see if you can do any of the actions through that. Otherwise, I would recommend doing a thorough malware check just in case.

Full and thorough malware check:

1. Restart your PC in “Safe mode with networking.” 2. Install and run RKill to kill malicious processes and services 3. Check your Programs and features and see if there are any new recently installed programs that you don’t recognize. If there are, remove them. 4. Check your task manager for any suspicious processes, if found, identify folders and try to remove them manually. Or just "Win key + R" and type %appdata%. Afterward, delete potentially malicious folders. 5. Do a full scan with anti-virus software of your choice or use Windows Defender to clean up initial infections. 6. Scan your PC with Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes, and AdwCleaner. Multiple anti-malware solutions will confirm that the threat was removed. 7. Clean up your Registry and Cached files with CCleaner 8. Restart your PC in normal mode and do an additional scan to confirm that the malware is gone.

Let me know if it helps you.

Re: Start\Windows icon

Well, plenty of work there, Josh! I've done virtually them all including Hitman Pro,MBAM, AdwCleaner, CCleaner but no change in anything, still same problem with the Start icon. Just can't wonder what I've done. Oh, and System Restore hasn't worked for months in my Win 10 so downloaded and was using Restore Point Creator which was better, but that nearly alway fails to work. Reformatting is a big job for me, trying to avoid. But thanks for attempt to help.

Re: Start\Windows icon

Hmm.... You could try getting a bootable Windows10 USB/CD and try a general repair function, see if that helps you in any way. You can also try a recovery with the bootable drive.

Re: Start\Windows icon

hello it's the first time I read that about clean_dns !

is it an upgrade from 7 or 8 ? or a native windows 10 ?

Re: Start\Windows icon

it's a native windows 10.

I'm not sure the cause is clean_dns, mind you, I'm still stalling on reformatting or such, so much work. 'Start' after doing the following :

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

using Powershell improves things a bit, but doesn't let me use Restart or Shutdown or open News etc. but I can right click on Start and use most of those. Beginning to think in terms of using Windows altogther!

Re: Start\Windows icon

hello if you use Windows Repair All-in-one , doesn't it work ?

On this Tweaking.com page, download Windows Repair and save the file to the desktop:

http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html

Installs the software Double-click the Repair_Windows.exe icon to launch the tool /! \ Under Vista and Windows 7/8 / 8.1 / 10, you must launch the file by right-clicking -> Run as administrator Click the Start Repairs tab, click Repairs, and then click Open Repairs Coche all Repairs Closes all applications, including browsers and clicks Start Lets the tool work and restarts the PC if it was not done automatically at the end of the operation.

Re: Start\Windows icon

Well, thanks, but I confess to not getting on with Tweaking.com. using it ususally ends up with things more worse than they were before. But thanks for suggestion.
