Re: Adwcleaner freezes during removal of viruses.

There can be malware that prevents the full execution of Adwcleaner. Try using RKill and then doing a full scan with the new version that Coco has suggested.

Re: False Positives V7

Since V7 I've been getting false positives on all my machines - often ones reported by others.  I suspect they are down to using SypwareBlaster.  This is an old but quite safe program which puts kill bits in the registry to prevent undesireable stuff running.  I think it would be worth installing SpywareBlaster then "enabling all protection", then see what ADWCleaner makes of it.  Thanks.

False Positive v7?

Today I stumbled upon this detection whilst using Adwcleaner 7.0.1.0:

***** [ Registry ] *****

PUP.Optional.YahooChrome, [Key] - HKLM\SOFTWARE\Yahoo\SS

Afterwards I scanned with other virusscanners (Malwarebytes, MBAR, and Roguekiller) and none of them detected aforementioned registery key. Thus, it seems like a false positive generated by adwcleaner.

Can someone confirm this?

Kind regard...

Have you noticed anything else weird/out of the ordinary on your PC? Can you try booting into Windows "Safe mode with networking" and see if you can do any of the actions through that. Otherwise, I would recommend doing a thorough malware check just in case.

Full and thorough malware check:

1. Restart your PC in “Safe mode with networking.” 2. Install and run RKill to kill malicious processes...

Since PUP is a potentially unwanted software, it might not be an infection, just some rogue application running or installed on your PC. Do a thorough scan with Malwarebytes and see if it helps to deal with the issue. Also, you can try searching for the folder manually, as the path is listed and remove it that way. If you have issues, kill the process with the task manager and then remove it.

After the logs, do you have any other anti-virus or active anti-malware software that could be interfering?Have you tried restarting PC, running RKill to kill potentially malicious software and scan with AdwCleaner? What about Windows safe mode? does that work?

Could you define the nature of the pop-up? Is it in the browser? On the desktop? through certain applications? When did the issue start happening? (Please answer these before continuing the read)

Since I am not certain about how it manifests, I can only offer a general thorough PC clean-up. The following steps should help you remove the issues, but make sure to post MBAM and ADW logs after sca...

Could you try restarting your PC in safe mode with networking, install Malwarebytes, do a full scan with them and then attempt to scan with AdwCleaner.

Before that, you could also use RKill to kill any malicious software before using anti-malware. Let me know if this helps.
