If the remove button isn't working, then it's the right manner yes. AdwCleaner is still portable even if it creates some files inside C:\AdwCleaner.
Keep in mind tho that the folder can contain Quarantined files that you won't be able to retrieve after removal. So I would still recommend keeping the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

Honestly, very weird issue, I would need to investigate the files. Can you scan your PC With Farbar MiniToolBox and Malwarebytes JRT? Post the logs that you get.

There can be malware that prevents the full execution of Adwcleaner. Try using RKill and then doing a full scan with the new version that Coco has suggested.

Got 2 viruses and the AdwCleaner freezes @20% during removal. Microsoft Security Essential and Malwarebytes does not detect these viruses.
